Spain has not really been known for pyramids but as you arrive via flights to Tenerife airport, head straight for a town called Guimar to view some of these amazing tombs. Guimar is a coastal town located towards eastern end of Tenerife. In case you need a break from the same old beaches and wish to take dive in the historical mysteries, Guimar will definitely offer you an amazing one. Most researchers, archaeologists and anthropologists have been bewildered by these pyramids since they were uncovered and identified as pyramids in 1991. The place opens for visitors everyday from 9.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. The only days it is closed is December 25th and January 1st every year.
Originally there were supposed to be 9 pyramids and out of them 6 remain today. The construction of the pyramid is a typical step by step piling up of several thousand stones. This type of construction is known to most archeologists. The 6 pyramids form part of the same design that makes all of them rectangular shaped and give them the desired steps. Though the pyramids are not as spectacular as those in Egypt, they are equally intriguing.
The pyramids were opened for the general public. It has been branded more as an ethnological park that houses a museum as well as a leisure area. The museum is meant for preserving and spreading the culture and ideas of ancient Spain. This is just to broaden peoples minds towards Tenerifes tradition and culture by allowing them to view and explore several models, replicas and artifacts that were uncovered from the pyramids.
Initially, after the newspaper had written a detailed description of the pyramids, most people had discarded it as misconception of the local masses who have taken piled up stones for a pyramid. It was only when Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian adventurer, anthropologist and researcher, came to examine the pyramids that he was forced to declare that they were indeed pyramids.
No one yet has been able to trace back their origins and their age. The pyramids were then accessed through excavations over and under the pyramids to get hold of Guanche artifacts.
The mention of large constructions has been there in the voyager named Hannos notes and writings when he has described the Islands. Another fascinating discovery of Guimar pyramids has been their stark closeness in the construction to the ones in ancient Mesopotami, Peru and Mexico.
Apart from Thors several theories, another possibility he brought forth was that the Canaries could actually have been a shipping base between the Americas and Mediterranean much before the Americas came into light during the 15th century. The pyramids till date are a mystery and children along with adults will definitely enjoy the visit.
