The Medieval Rose Festival at Rhodes

If your only image of the Greek islands is of package holidays, then prepare to have your horizons broadened. From May 15th to June 27th, the island of Rhodes is transported back in time courtesy of the Medieval Rose Festival. Rhodes is an island steeped in history, and the festival is an incredible chance to watch the past come alive in front of your eyes.
The festival takes place in the island's Old Town, which is a UNESCO world heritage site and comes complete with medieval wall and moat. Once you've passed through the ancient walls, prepare to literally walk back in time. The entire town is decorated to resemble the middle ages, and this allows you to completely immerse yourself in a bygone time. As you wander down the narrow streets you have the opportunity to taste traditional dishes, buy local produce, watch an authentic puppet theatre or marvel at the archery contests. Everywhere you look, the committee of historians, archaeologists, visual artists, craftsmen and actors ensure that the festival is authentic down to the smallest detail.
Events get off to a spectacular start with a procession of the Order of the Knights, which includes armoured knights on horseback marching alongside infantry through the streets of the town. But don't think that the festival is only a spectator event. Every guest is invited to join in, so if the mood takes you, feel free to don some medieval garments and dive into the 'witches and fairies dance'.
The performances by fire eaters, jugglers and jesters provide entertainment for all ages, while for those who take their history more seriously there are seminars and guided tours on the colourful Byzantine and medieval history of the island. If your energy levels are flagging then make sure you spare some time to stuff your face at one of the sumptuous banquets.
Flythomascook.com operate flights to Rhodes from a number of UK airports, and once you've touched down you are only a short drive from the picturesque coastal resorts of Faliraki, Lindos and Haraki. If history re-enactments aren't your cup of tea, then remember that you're already surrounded by some of the best beaches in the Mediterranean. However, if you like your holidays to involve more than simply sitting by a pool, then this is definitely a trip to consider.
