The Second Jewel in Rhode's Crown

For many visitors to the island of Rhodes, the history and architecture of Rhodes Old Town is bound to be the main attraction when looking to get away from the wonderful beaches. But halfway down the east coast of the island is another location that has its own share of Rhode's history and is certainly worth a visit.
Lindos village is a very popular place during the peak summer period with tourists arriving by car, coach and boat to sample its unique location and history. Perched four hundred feet above the village, on a rise overlooking the bay below, is the Acropolis of Lindos which was home to various constructions dating back to 300BC. There are still some very well preserved remains of the buildings from that period including the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, but The Castle of the Knights of St John that was constructed 700 years ago still remains largely intact. In addition to the remarkable Acropolis, the whitewashed houses of the town and the beach down on the bay make this a very desirable place to visit.
The beauty of Lindos now seems to be secured after periods when rapid development threatened to harm the charm of the village and attempts at renovations appeared to do more harm than good. Fortunately further development is very strictly controlled, cars are banned from the village centre and now the Government has restoration firmly under control. Even donkeys are on-hand to transport people who find the climb to the Acropolis a little too demanding.
Within the village, visitors will find places of interest on every corner with narrow twisting lanes and traditional Lindian Homes, many with beautiful internal courtyards some containing wonderful gardens that are open to the public. The tall bell tower of the Panagia church lies in the middle of the village and inside visitors can view stunning frescos of religious scenes which cover most of the walls and vaulted ceilings. In order to preserve these works photography is not permitted so postcards are the only option for taking a souvenir of them back home.
