A quick straw pole around the office showed that more than half of the people had never heard of the Greek island of Santorini. I wondered why that was and thought that, although it has been a popular tourist destination for over 20 years, perhaps UK travel companies don't specialise in trips there, preferring to focus on places like Kos, Mykanos and Rhodes.
When you check back on the history of Santorini, you read about the massive volcanic explosion that first created the island. Looking at the location of Thira, the main town on the island, it all seems pretty obvious. It looks as if the town has just been pushed skywards to its current location high on the cliffs above the sea. The location makes it a great spot for amateur photographers to take shots of the arriving and departing cruise ships or the amazing sunsets that seem to appear frequently in these parts. Tho old parts of Thira are worth exploring with the traditional whitewashed buildings and narrow streets creating more amazing views. The town can get busy though and it is really worth a visit rather than an extended stay. I'd suggest heading for one of the more holiday orientated resorts on the island. As well a more relaxed atmosphere you'll also be closer to the sea. That volcanic eruption that pushed Thira skywards makes it pretty tricky to get down to the sea. Passengers arriving by ship are faced with the same wall of cliffs to navigate. You can walk up and down the mule path but a far easier option is to take the cablecar which runs all day long.
