Thomas Cook Flights Assist Charity Jailbreak

Sand beach under a red volcano in Lanzarote

Flights to Lanzarote donated by Thomas Cook helped a team of three that triumphed in a charity jail break challenge during November.

The Jailbreak Charity Hitchhike challenge for the forty teams taking part was to travel as far away as possible from the start point at the Student Union building of Bristol University within the time period allowed. The teams started at 9am on Saturday 14th November and had until 9pm the following day to make their journey. That meant only 36 hours and, with no money available, the task was going to be difficult.

The aim of the event was to raise as much money as possible for various local charities. Several teams raised over 500 pounds for their nominated charities.

Amazingly, the winning team managed to get to the island of Lanzarote before the Sunday deadline. Using their skill and powers of persuasion the team named 'Left Hand Drive' travelled a total of 1665 miles to win the challenge. The three ladies in the team used a combination of buses, various train journeys and flights donated by Thomas Cook to reach the island of Lanzarote. They even managed to talk their way into getting free use of a hotel apartment overnight before returning to Bristol. The team was aiming to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House which provides accommodation for the families of critically ill children who are receiving care at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.

Texting an update to the event website before making their return journey, team member Laura Davies sent this message - "Coach and plane sorted for tomorrow. Amazing. We love Thomas Cook!"

As well as travelling the furthest, the Left Hand Drive girls have also raised the most money so far of all the participating teams. Well done!
