The town of Pollensa in the north of Mallorca has a dual personality. Inland lies the old town of Pollensa itself with its fine architecture, pretty market square and a choice of luxury hotels. More recent development has created the area of Puerto Pollensa, a yacht marina flanked by a sweeping sandy beach on one side and shady promenade walk on the other.
Pollensa town lies about 30 miles north of Palma de Mallorca and 3 miles inland from the coast. The town is the location of the Pollensa Music Festival that runs throughout the months of July and August. The festival was founded in 1962 by the renowned violinist Philip Newman. All concerts take place in the cloister of San Domingo. Last year was a great success thanks to the performances of the Barcelona Jazz Orchestra, piano and violin concerts, the Stuttgart Chamber orchestra and a group of 12 Cellists from the Berlin Philharmonic. The concerts all start quite late at 10pm, so may not be suitable for children.
Puerto Pollensa holds its own festival on the 15th and the 16th of July, when the Feste de la Verge del Carmen takes place. The Square, or Placa Miguel Capllonch is the hub of the festival which includes exhibitions, traditional music and dance performances, children's activities, a Beach party with DJ and a spectacular Grand Firework display over La Gola beach at midnight on the final day. Puerto Pollensa is a smaller, more intimate, holiday destination that the larger resort of Alcudia further along the coast. There is less in the way of cafes and restaurants, but the beach is very nice and the location is perfect for a quieter family holiday. For people wanting to venture out of the area, the lighthouse at Formentor is a short but interesting journey or there are options, when heading south, to go over the mountains to the Monastery at Lluc, Sa Calobra or the pretty Puerto de Soller.
