The Caves of Kefalonia

The lighthouse near Agostoli

In the south, the tiny village of Fiskardo is a wonderful place to stay, with its Venetian lighthouse welcoming ships and boats in its pretty port. Fiskardo was founded by a French crusader back in the 11th century. The Venetian theme is carried through the houses on the waterfront here as they have lots of Venetian architectural touches. The town centre is pedestrianised and there is a maze of alleys to investigate, with local shops and stores to explore.

Is Lefkas an Ionian Island?

Porto Katsiki beach at Lefkas

Lefkas is a beautiful location you'd probably miss if you weren't in Greece on an island hopping trip. Surprisingly, because it technically isn't an island at all. Lefkas was not an island until the locals dug a channel through the sandbanks to sever it from the mainland in the 5th Century BC. Today, it is reattached to the mainland by long causeway and floating bridge that have replaced the original ferry introduced in Roman times by the Emperor Augustus.

By far the biggest occasion during April was the two day visit by Pope Benedict XVI to the island, an event that commemorated an unfortunate event that happened almost two thousand years ago. That was the time when St Paul's boat was shipwrecked on Malta while he was on a voyage to Rome. The Saint remained on Malta for 3 months and there are many locations around the island that exist due to this unfortunate accident. In Rabat there is St Paul's Grotto and Church that was built in the 17th Century. It is claimed that the grotto was also used by the Romans as a prison and it was also an air raid shelter during the 2nd World War.

Luxor and the heart of Egypt

egyptian monument

With flights to Luxor normally leaving the UK from three different airports, there are several options for a trip to this city in the heart of Egypt. Situated on the banks of the Nile, Luxor is famous as a base for the popular river cruises that take tourists up and down the longest river in the world. The Nile, which rises in two places in Ethiopia and East Africa before travelling over 4000 miles and emptying into the Mediterranean, is thought to have been a profound factor in the development of the ancient Egyptian civilisation. Providing not only fertile lands but also a means of transport, it also acted a barrier and defense during times of conflict. As it passes through Luxor the Nile is quite wide and slow flowing and until a bridge was built at a narrower stretch of the river south of the city, ferry boats were the only convenient way of crossing between sides.

Clean Beaches in Fuerteventura

Beach of Morro Jable fuerteventura

Concern over the state of the beaches in Fuerteventura was what started the CleanOceanProject project three years ago. Since then, the campaign has held numerous events that encourage groups to meet up and carry out clean-up exercises on the beaches of the island. The original concern was highlighted when the beaches used by surfers and windsurfers on the island were starting to experience a build-up of rubbish, so the founders of the initiave called on the surfers themselves to drive the project forward. In addition to deriving their enjoyment from the ocean, it turned out the surfers were more than happy to put some effort back into keeping their sporting environment clean.

The Californian surfboard designer who carved his first body board from a chunk of polystyrene foam was in fact doing exactly what Polynesian natives had done thousands of years earlier to allow them to float and surf the waves around their islands.

In 1291 the Knights had been forced out of Jerusalem and after a brief, unsuccessful period in Cyprus, they selected Rhodes as their new domain. The initial years on Rhodes, and some other small islands that also formed part of their occupation, were not entirely peaceful and some disquiet saw the knights attempt to assassinate their leader. Grand Master Foulques de Villaret, had instigated the conquest of Rhodes, but found himself seeking refuge in the castle at Lindos on the island, while another Grand Master was appointed to replace him.

The ancient ruins of Termessos located about 20 miles north west of Antalya are one of the must-see attractions in this part of Turkey. The town's history is thought to date back at least 3000 years, so don't expect to see too much in the way of standing structures but the large Amphitheatre, which could probably have seated between four and five thousand people, is largely intact and the Hadrian's Gate gives an indication of the pride its past residents had of the place. The location is thought to have been selected on the basis of a former Psidian Fortress which was built high in the hills at the foot of Rose Mountain and survived virtually every attack made on it.
