It is possible to see the occasional dolphin or basking shark in UK coastal waters, particularly off the Cornish coast, but if you are looking for bigger creatures such as Minke whales, Sperm whales or Blue whales then Fuerteventura is only a four hour flight from the UK.
Organised trips depart daily during the season from Caleta harbour on Fuerteventura offering various trips from short two hour excursions to full day adventures. The boats used are equipped with listening equipment to help track down the whales and dolphins. Prices are around 40 euros for adults. Some companies offer glass-bottomed boats or catamarans to make viewing easier. As well as whales and dolphins there are also turtles, flying fish, Manta Rays and, for the game fishermen, Blue Marlin to be found. Later in the season small Skipjack Tuna can also be found. On rare occasions whales have become stranded on the beaches and the skeleton of one can be seen near Caleta.
The best time for spotting is in March and April due to the prevalence of mackerel shoals then. Similar trips are available from Tazacorte on La Palma.
