The Venetian occupation of Zante

Greek orthodox church in Zante

An excursion on Zante to consider is a boat trip from the port of Agios Nikolaos to explore the island's rock formations off the northern coast as well as the stunning Blue Caves. Tours usually offer a swim and snorkle break around the limestone caves and a freshly prepared lunch. Many trips continue on for more swimming at the famous Shipwreck Cove, which is accessible only from the water.

Volimes is a traditional hill village worth exploring as are Kampi and Exo Chora. There are guided walks throughout the north and west of Zante in rural areas. There is even a city walk through Zante Town that goes through the waterfront, and around the city's squares and historic areas.

When exploring Zante Town itself, it is faintly reminiscent of Venice, Italy. Zante was once ruled by the seafaring Venetians (and the island was once known as the 'Venice of the south'). The 1953 earthquake devastated the region but Zante Town was eventually rebuilt.

Visitors can view a model of the original Venetian town and artifacts from the pre-earthquake Zante Town in the Museum of Post-Byzantine Art in Solomos Square. St Mark's Square is named after its Venetian counterpart and is worth a peek.

The Venetian Fortress of Zakynthos is the best remnant of the Venetian occupation of Zante. Located about three km's north of Zante Town, the castle is at the top of a hill and was built on top of the ruins of the ancient acropolis. The castle and the grounds (with many pine trees) offer visitors a wonderful view of the town below, especially at night.

While in Zante Town, another spot to visit is the Agios Dionysios church. The interior's mosaics and paintings are colourfully stunning. The exterior is a combination of Byzantine style mixed with Occidental architectural touches. The entrance of the church is full of lovely Orthodox wall paintings too.
