In and around Lanzarote
Lanzarote is an eclectic mix of golden, sandy beaches and an interior landscape that almost resembles the surface of the moon! The volcanic nature of the island means that flora and fauna have adapted to the somewhat harsh conditions, as has man. The vineyards of La Gería, with their traditional methods of cultivation, are a protected area. Single vines are planted in pits 4-5m wide and 2-3m deep, with small, semi-circular stone walls around each pit. This agricultural technique is designed to harvest rainfall and overnight dew and to protect the plants from the winds. The vineyards are part of a designated World Heritage Site that also encompasses other sites on the island.
The geography of Lanzarote is particularly dramatic, with towering cliffs bordering wide sandy beaches on the coast, and extensive lavafields and mountains in the interior. The mountainous area of Lanzarote is called Timanfaya National Park. The tallest mountain is Peñas del Chache elevating 670 m above sea level. The "Tunnel of Atlantis" is the largest submerged volcanic tunnel in the world and is a popular visitor attraction. The island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protected site, indicating the importance of the island as a unique example of a volcanic ecosystem.
The island has become a magnate for some of the best windsurfers in the world, with calm water and a breeze from Africa that makes Lanzarote a perfect location for this popular sport. For visitors who would like to try their hand at windsurfing, there are plenty of opportunities to have a go under expert tuition in a safe environment.
Resorts in Lanzarote are noted for their vibrant nightlife and emphasis on entertainment. Good quality restaurants give visitors an opportunity to try local dishes and because of the continuing influence of the sea on the island’s economy, fresh shellfish and traditional fish dishes blend a range of influences including Spanish and African recipes. The broad, sandy beaches make Lanzarote a perfect location for a family holiday, and many of the resorts are specifically designed to cater for family holidays and keeping the little ones entertained.
